Emergency relief systems must be designed specifically for an individual process and installation. Opting for a “standard” size will generally be inadequate, as there are numerous factors to take into consideration. Specifically, some of the relief scenarios are complex to calculate because they involve a combination of chemical reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. To address this challenge, the Design Institute for Emergency Relief Systems (DIERS) developed a comprehensive methodology that considers various factors, such as the physical properties of the reactants, reaction kinetics, reactor design, and operating conditions, to calculate the potential overpressure scenarios. The DIERS methodology involves a rigorous and systematic approach that incorporates the latest scientific and engineering knowledge and has been widely adopted in the industry to ensure safe process design and operation.
The DIERS methodology is a highly effective approach for predicting overpressure scenarios in chemical reactions, but it can be complex and requires expertise in the fields of chemical engineering, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. However, DEKRA uses state-of-the-art computational tools and software, so that these calculations can be performed with greater accuracy and efficiency.
